Museum of Qin Terracotta Soldiers and Horse Figures
Emperor
Qin Shi Hang, the first emperor of Qin, was the first Chinese ruler
to unify China. His tomb lies 30 kilometres to the east of Xi'an
city. In March 1974, some local farmers struck terracotta life-like
size soldiers and horses when they were sinking wells some 1.5 kilometres
to the east of the Qin emperor's tomb. That was the discovery of
the vaults where a terracotta army had been buried for more than
2,000 years. There were a group of burial pits attached to the emperor's
tomb. While excavation was under way, the State built a museum there
where 8,000 terracotta soldiers, generals and horses as well as
large quantities of burial articles are on display. The terracotta
figures of generals, armoured soldiers, robed soldiers and a rchers
in an awe-inspiring battle array. Also uncovered and on display
are tens of thousands of battle weapons and a large lacquered bronze
chariot and horses. This world's "eighth wonder" serves
as evidence of the prosperity of ancient Chang'an and the reason
why the city served as the starting point of the Silk Road. The
museum is open from 8:30 - 18:00
